Arcade-Bars and Gaming Lounges On the Rise

I recently read an article in Travel Weekly that lead me to Level Up, a hybrid bar, gaming lounge and arcade, that recently opened at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Sounds like something from an 80’s movie right?

Level Up is one of many “arcade-bars” popping up across the nation. Offering Millennial’s refuge from your average nightclub or bar scene; Level Up, and establishments like it, contain pay-to-play games including foosball, QuadAir Hockey, and Giant Pac-Man, just to name a few. The article stood out to me because the idea of a gaming lounge (or an arcade-bar, as some people refer to them) represents the shift in generational influence that is happening in many industries. The trend has even grown in popularity here in St. Louis. Last summer, the owners of Wheelhouse (downtown) decided to spice up the St. Louis bar scene by opening Start Bar, their version of the arcade-bar. We also look forward to Parlor, a social club and pub, to open summer of 2017 at 4170 Manchester Avenue. Parlor will be a full bar, with an A+ roster of DJs, a jukebox, billiards, arcade games and a permanent Byrd & Barrel food truck. And more recently, news just broke about Up Down STL, the latest arcade-bar coming to the St. Louis area. Even better, Up Down STL plans to open their location right next door to CHI-CHI headquarters at 405 Euclid Ave!

While the idea of an arcade-bar was carried out with Millennials in mind, many of these establishments still offer more traditional games, such as pool, and darts. Others - Level Up for instance - also encompass traditional core concepts, such as gambling. Imagine the nostalgic feeling of being surrounded by neon lights, and the Pac-Man theme song – intertwined with melodic whims - playing in the background. The arcade-bar is familiar, yet innovative in its approach to nightlife and event spaces. Whether you’re planning a trip to Vegas, or an event here in St. Louis, you can’t go wrong with cocktails and Pac-Man!
